Ignis had everything laid out just like he did every mission. On the table were all of the things needed and he was going to teach Madoka what order they went in to prepare them. "First we'll start with teaching you how to make healing potions."
He'd learned from personal experience that she was no fighter, but she loved to help other people. She wasn't one for weapons but she did want to learn bow. While he himself didn't use a bow, Noct used a crossbow and maybe Tony had some experience.
She'd wanted to learn and here they all were to do just that.
It's probably for the better for Madoka to learn something relatively harmless first, anyway. Especially since she's mostly driven to fight out of the sheer desire to be useful in some way - and being able to help out with the healing potions would make her feel a lot more useful all by itself. Keeping people healthy is important, after all!
So she only glances back for a moment to give Tony a smile - she appreciates the encouragement so much, okay! - before turning back to nod at Ignis' words.
"I'd love to learn that." And she's ready to get started! "What do we have to do first?"
Tony looks over at the stuff on the table curiously. "How did you get all those ingredients?" He asked, surprised. "That's different than the flowers we used before." It was going to be interesting to see if this process was different than the ones he learned to make with ... uh.. what was her name again? He couldn't remember. Well he would if he used some effort but he didn't care enough to do that.
His goal was to hang back and let Ignis do what he wanted here, but his inquisitive mind couldn't be muzzled all the way.
He had a mortar and pestle out on the table with some of the ground herbs in them along with some bottles of water. "You mix the herbs and pour them into the water. And that's when I charge them."
So Madoka would be carrying charged potions, made manifest by the absent king's magic.
Ignis smiled at Tony. "I found them in the kitchen tucked away and from what I've been told these three are the best we had. There's Chamomile, Milk Thistle and Echinacea. All have medicinal properties." Add to that Ignis' healing technique and the herbs did what he needed them to do. "And yes, agreed that they are a bit different." But he could make the herbs that he had work.
For what it's worth, it's not like Tony's questions really are a disturbance. Madoka just gives him a curious look when he asks. "Dad, you made them before?"
The girl isn't fully distracted by it though. She's not quite getting to work yet, but it's mostly since she's looking at the ingredients, mentally trying to memorize them. Sure, she's lucky enough to practically always be in Ignis' company whenever she's not on the train, but it's still good if she knew it in case she ever has to gather some by herself, right?
He nodded, though it helped clear up some of his confusion when he realized Ignis used magic as part of his technique. It was unfortunate that this meant Madoka could only help with making the potions and not actually make them herself as she- like Tony- didn't have any magic abilities of their own.
"Yes, when we were on Ciyesia. Do you remember that world? It was our first mission. The innkeeper there taught me how to brew the flowers into potions. It looks to be a different process than this one."
He was quiet as Tony and Madoka spoke, and only piped up afterwards. "I've had to play around with them for a bit. They didn't go together quite as well as I had expected." It had been like cooking really and Ignis never wasted the time the Blue team was given in the kitchen. "They're really charged when I can use my healing technique with them. But, out on the battlefield these will be more than good enough for the two of you if I am not by your side."
Of course it would be a LOT easier if they could just buy potions, but that wasn't going to happen here. The thought of ordering some from home could be a possibility as well.
As expected, it'd really be easier if she did have magical powers too, huh.. It's not enough to bum Madoka out right now, since she's so determined to do her best and learn here, but the thought still can't help but pass through her mind all the same. It'll be helpful if she can at least do this much, sure, but it'd be so much better if she could make the potions magical the way Ignis can..
She tries to shake the thought off the best she can.
"Will these potions then still do a little bit even without magic..?"
He nodded in agreement with Ignis and gave Madoka a reassuring smile. He didn't think this was something she should feel bummed about. There seemed to be plenty she could still help with.
"Yes, from what I'm understanding it's only in the creation of the potions the magic is needed, right Ignis? Once the potion is made, anyone can use it. So it's still useful for us to help make the potions and let Ignis add the magic at the end- saves him time- and then you'll be armed with potions to help those who might need it during the next mission with or without Ignis present."
He looked to Ignis to see if he had that correct or not.
He went to go answer Madoka when Tony was right there providing her answer so he nodded at the knight. "This is why I spend so much time making sure medicines are made before missions along with food rations." People could say whatever they wanted, but Ignis wanted to make sure people were taken care of as best he could. That was a carryover from home because he was a caretaker, so it was just his nature.
"It never hurts to have more than you think is necessary..these battles can take anyone by surprise."
".. right." Madoka slowly nods as she takes it all in. Especially that last part. Sure, there are so many strong people on the train - including both of her dads, in Madoka's opinion - but these battles can be so big and scary sometimes. Even strong people can get hurt.
"I think I understand.. Can I try making one now then?"
